The tour begins through the forest, first with a gentle descent, then continuing along the border to a small, hidden lake. It continues along a stream, briefly onto the road, past the Hotel Guglwald, across the Czech side to a former historic farmstead that was demolished in the 1950s to make way for the construction of the Iron Curtain. Back in Austria, after a short climb, you’ll reach the Hotel AVIVA again. A great trail run with a few climbs and stunning natural scenery.

You’ll need your energy for the climb up Pedni Yvton (Heuraffl), back across the National Park to Pasenca, and then back across the border to Austria. To finish up, you’ll tackle a few more meters of elevation gain on the way back up to the AVIVA Hotel.

Trail run to the Wittinghausen castle ruins, along the Schwemmkanal to the Bayrische Au with a view of the Moldau Reservoir

The “King’s Stage” covers nearly a marathon distance. Start right from the Hotel AVIVA and head to the Helfenberger Hütte, crossing the border into the Czech Republic and straight into the Šumava National Park. Right from the start, you’ll enjoy a fantastic view of the wind farm and the Mühlviertel region. The route climbs to St. Tomas and the Wittinghausen Castle Ruins (1,035 m). (Tip: On a clear day, the castle offers a fantastic view of the entire Moldau Reservoir.)

The route descends gently directly to the 8th Wonder of the World, the Schwemmkanal. Read about the history of the pioneering work and engineering behind it.

Following the canal through the forest and unspoiled natural surroundings, you’ll reach the Bayrische Au, which offers a fantastic view of the Moldau Reservoir.

Now the route continues along the Schwarzenberg Alluvial Canal to the Iglback Bridge—where a bridge was built for the canal to cross the stream—and on to the canal’s steep drop. Passing natural gems and historic sites through the national park, you’ll head back to Austria, and after one final climb, you’ll be back at AVIVA.

By the way, this route is also an insider tip from AVIVA owner Christian, himself a trail runner and nature lover.

The trail follows the canal to its steep drop and continues on to the Iglbach Bridge, where a bridge was built for the canal to cross a stream. After a break, the route takes you past natural gems and historic sites through the national park back to Austria, and after one final climb, you’ll be back at the AVIVA.
