Anyone who thinks that the real road bike experience only comes with mountain passes and Alpine peaks has not yet experienced the Mühlviertel. The gently rolling but challenging landscape north of the Danube is full of surprises – with sporting challenges, scenic beauty, and genuine solitude on two wheels.
The Mühlviertel is one of the four historical regions of Upper Austria. Characterized by the granite and gneiss highlands of the Bohemian Massif, it offers ideal conditions for challenging bike tours: constant ups and downs, hardly any flat passages, deep valleys that wind their way through the rock along old river courses – and a vastness that is second to none. In the north, the area borders directly on the Czech Republic – home to the impressive Moldau reservoir, which can be perfectly incorporated into longer tours.
A road bike tour through the Mühlviertel region is more than just sport – it is an escape from everyday life, a flow experience combining speed, technique, and nature. Many routes surprise with significantly more elevation gain than the elevation profile initially suggests – ideal for those who love a challenge.
